Planned Improvements
While final designs will continue to be refined with public input, the City is evaluating a range of potential improvements, including:
Traffic and Congestion Improvements
- Intersection improvements and potential roundabouts to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow
- New or enhanced routes to better distribute traffic and improve emergency access
- Updated traffic signals and intersection configurations
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
- New, repaired, and widened ADA-compliant sidewalks
- High-visibility crosswalks, curb extensions, and pedestrian refuge islands
- Pedestrian-activated rapid flashing beacons at key crossings
- Designated bike lanes, bicycle parking, and repair amenities
- Street design features that encourage slower vehicle speeds
- Improved lighting, signage, trees, and streetscape elements
River and Downtown Connectivity
- Improved pedestrian access between downtown and the Kinnickinnic River
- Enhancements to Riverwalk Alley to better connect riverfront trails with downtown businesses
Infrastructure and Resilience Upgrades
- Reconstructed road bases for long-term durability
- Stormwater improvements, including green infrastructure
- New ADA curb ramps and accessible water services
- Replacement of aging water and wastewater systems
- Undergrounding electric utilities to improve reliability, resilience, and downtown aesthetics
