[ARCHIVED] River Falls 101: City Launches a Citizens Academy

River Falls 101 Newsflash

In February, the City of River Falls will welcome its first cohort into River Falls 101, a brand-new citizens academy that will run from February 2 through May 11. The program is open to City of River Falls residents and individuals outside of city limits who are serviced by River Falls Municipal Utilities (RFMU). River Falls 101 is free, and anyone over 16 years of age may apply.

The program will be comprised of seven interactive learning sessions led by City staff, who will provide participants an in-depth look at City departments and operations including, but not limited to, Community Development (i.e., city planning, zoning, and code enforcement), Forestry, Public Safety, Utilities (i.e., electric, water, and wastewater), Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Fire, and Police.

Participants will navigate the program as a cohort, learning alongside fellow community members. The City anticipates a class size of around twenty.

“There are so many people in River Falls that are invested in our city and community, but the idea of getting involved with governmental processes can feel really daunting,” Jason Stroud, Assistant City Administrator, said. “Even if you have the drive and desire to take a more active role in local government, it can be hard to know where to begin. We’re creating River Falls 101 to help you make that leap.”

Sessions will be held on Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. at River Falls City Hall. The City will hold a graduation ceremony to honor participants on Tuesday, May 11, at that evening’s City Council meeting.

“Through enrolling in this program, you’ll not only get a comprehensive overview of how our city government works – you’ll also build new relationships and connections that will strengthen your roots in the city,” Dan Toland, Mayor of the City of River Falls, said. “By the time graduation rolls around, your city government won’t feel so distant – you’ll personally know Cindi, our Recreation Manager, Mike, our Public Works Director, and so many other important individuals who work behind the scenes every day to help our city thrive.”

The application for River Falls 101 is now open and will close on Tuesday, January 10, at 11:59 p.m. Visit the following link for more information and to apply:
